Cyber-kids need more than passive protection
The Courier Mail has obviously been peeking under the bed today as they splash their front page with a story about paedophiles blackmailing children into online indecency.
Perhaps this article will wake people up to the fact that passively filtering the sites their children visit is a hopelessly flawed and ultimately counter-productive plan.
Just in case somebody doesn’t get it, I’ll attempt to explain the situation. No amount of Conroy’s filtering will stop your children from being approached by predators whilst online. The only way to stop this is to do one of three things:
- Teach your children how to be safe on the internet,
- Catch all the baddies, or
- Disconnect your internet entirely.
My initial reaction to this article was that the CM was jumping into bed with Sen. Conroy and doing its utmost to stir the public’s fear of paedophiles. At second glance I can’t think of a more damaging article for his Clean Feed Crusade. All of a sudden, even the rabbits that populists (Ed) such as Conroy, Xenophon and Fielding prey on are going to start asking how their Senatorial ‘plants’ are going to protect them from these more intelligent rock spiders.
I’m sorry to tell you this Mr. and Mrs. Hillsong, but so far Sen. Conroy hasn’t got a clue. He’s too busy with the woollen mask he was going to use to get your votes next time.
The C-M has posted a couple of stories today about sexual predators. I’d like to see some statistics on how many they usually publish on a Saturday compared to today, the first Saturday after the Blogosphere and the Media really started arcing up about the issue.
How much more could the AFP and other Scorp-groups like Argos could be doing with $44m?

I don’t think Xenophon’s all that right-wing. He’s a populist with a handful of principles.
I think that “popularists such as Conroy, Xenophon and Fielding ” would have been more accurate. Perhaps that needs to be edited.
Done.
