In my humble opinion, Costello had to go. When he released his memoirs, that was pretty much it for Costello. It was just a matter of when. Bailey is just another casualty of retiring and giving her a way out. It could’ve been timed so the focus was on Costello. It might even have been a faction trade off.
I still think it’s a shame we’ll never get to see the “Abbott & Costello” show in Opposition; imagine the endless global satirical content it would generate.
